Many of us want to know why there are different type of hard drives and what is the difference between SSD and Electromechanical drives? why SSD drive Perform better in Windows 10? and many questions, so I have came up with information flow that is very easy to understand for any layman user.
Lets find out Why SSD drive Perform better in Windows 10 ?
What is the difference between SSD and Mechanical drives?
Electro Mechanical Hard disk has two components which are important
A spindle motor to rotate one or more layers of platters
An actuator arm to move a read/write βheadβ across the platters
SSD are made from Semiconductor components by using NAND Flash Memory. The NAND flash cell is made from floating gate transistors. Electrical charge is stored on the floating gate separated by an Oxide insulating layer. Floating gate is charged when programmed and has binary value 0 and if erased the floating gate has binary value 1. it holds 1 and 0 until it is changed by surrounded circuits. If there is no Power to NAND devices, Won’t affect the state of floating gate Binary value and remains same. SSD require smaller physical size, removability, lower power, higher performance
SSD are made of semiconductors and it can handle shock and vibration. Where as hard disk has a spindle motor to rotate the platters, actuator arm to read and write data. shock and vibration can displace the position of platters and cause disk read/Write errors. SSD need less power compared to Mechanical motors to rotate the platters. More power needed to motor to rotate platters and an actuator to move the heads to the correct location. SSD generally uses much less power than its mechanical hard drives.
Read Write Operation on SSD and Mechanical drives
Hard disks consist of Magnetoresistive (MR) or Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) heads.
The read heads are the interface between the magnetic physical media on which the data is stored and the
electronic components that make up the rest of the hard electronic components that make up the rest of the hard disk. Heads are energy converters, they transform electrical signals to Magnetic signals and magnetic signals back to electrical signals. The disk heads converts bits to magnetic pulses and sore them on platters and reverse the process while reading.
SSD Drives, data are written to a pool of NAND Flash which are made up of flash gate transistors. NAND Chips are organized in a grid or block and rows. Reading and Writing Data is much faster on empty drive then overwriting data is slower. SSD read data at page level ( Individual rows within NAND Gird) and write an page level assuming surrounding cells are empty, data erase at block level. To Erase data from NAND Flash require high amount of voltage.
If an SSD hard drive is full, SSD Scans for blocks and marks for deletion, erase and write data on those blocks. SSD becomes slower as it becomes older, empty blocks can be written faster.
SSDs use less power and result in longer battery life because data access is much faster and the device is idle more often. Electro Mechanical spinning disks, HDD’s require more power during start up than SSDs.
Windows 10 Defragment and Optimize Drives App for Solid State Drive (SSD)
Defrag on Electro Mechanical disk is done to improve the performance and the Defragment tool gather files which were scattered all around the disk and get the blocks closer to each other and make read write operation faster and index them for faster performance. Windows automatically defragments Electro Mechanical Hard disk, and defragmentation isnβt necessary with SSD drives.
Solid state drive optimization: Windows 10 runs a TRIM command, which can potentially speed up, optimize performance of the drive and this runs in the background of Windows 10. Note : if you want to check TRIM Command is running, Open Command prompt in Administrator mode and use this command “fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify” results shows “0” it is enabled “1” disabled. To enable run this command “fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0”
NAND flash cells degrade every time you erase data and write new information to them. Repeated disk writes on blocks degrade but the wear leveling process stops non-sequential writing errors, so that each block is used to capacity before a new block used for Writing.
Is solid state drive performance better than Hard disk
YES SSD performance is better than Electromechanical drives, SSD require smaller physical size, removability, lower power, higher performance, handles shock and vibration.
Should You Defrag an SSD?
Defrag is done in the background by Windows 10 based on the performance. Defrag can decrease the lifespan of SSD if frequently done.
What are the solid state drive (SSD) advantages?
SSDs have high performance of read and Write operations, reliable and require smaller physical size, removability, lower power, higher performance, handles shock and vibration.
Are any disadvantage of Solid State Drive (SSD)?
One disadvantage of solid state drive is cost is much higher compared to Electromechanical disks. With more disks erase the lifespan of the disk becomes less and performance degrades.
